مشاعرہ عربی میں لفظ ’’شعر‘‘ کو باب مفاعلہ میں لے جاتے ہیں اور’’مُشاعَرہ‘‘ (اول مضموم، چہارم مفتوح) حاصل کرتے ہیں۔ لیکن وہاں اس کے معنی ہیں، ’’مقابلے کی غرض سے باہم شعرپڑھنا یا کہنا‘‘۔یعنی اس میں کسی باقاعدہ طور پر ترتیب دی ہوئی محفل شعر خوانی اور سامعین کی موجودگی کا کوئی تصور نہیں۔ اردو میں اول مضموم اور چہارم مکسور (مُشاعِرہ) بمعنی ’’شعر سنانے کی محفل، جس میں سامعین بھی ہوں اور کئی شعرا شعر سنائیں‘‘ عام طور پر مستعمل ہے اور اسی کو صحیح سمجھنا چاہئے۔ بعض لوگ میم اور عین پر زبر بولتے تھے۔ اب یہ تلفظ رائج نہیں، ’’مشاعرہ‘‘ (اول مضموم، چہارم مکسور)بروزن ’’مقابلہ‘‘ ہی صحیح ہے۔
