ملازمت عربی میں چہارم مفتوح ہے، لیکن اردو میں چہارم مکسور رائج ہے۔ پرانی اردو میں اس لفظ کے ایک معنی ’’ملاقات‘‘بھی تھے اور اسے اس موقعے کے لئے برتتے تھے جب کوئی چھوٹا کسی بڑے کی خدمت میں رسومیاتی طور پر حاضر ہو۔’’ملازم‘‘ کے اصل معنی ہیں: ’’کسی کے ساتھ پیوستہ رہنے والا‘‘۔ چونکہ نوکر ہمیشہ اپنے مالک کے ساتھ ہمیشہ موجود رہتا ہے، لہٰذا اردو والوں نے’’ملازم‘‘ کو ’’نوکر‘‘ کے معنی میں استعمال کرنا شروع کردیا اور پھر اس کی تانیث’’ملازمہ‘‘ بھی بنالی۔ اسی طرح، ’’نوکری‘‘ کے معنی میں’’ملازمت‘‘ رائج ہوا۔ یہ سب معنی عربی میں نہیں ہیں۔’’ملازمہ‘‘ کی جمع ’’ملازمیں/ملازمائیں‘‘ دونوں سنی گئی ہیں۔
