ملہم اول سوم مفتوح بمعنی ’’مرہم‘‘، فارسی میں ہے۔ مشرقی علاقوں میں بھی یہ لفظ (یا ’’مرہم‘‘ کا یہ تلفظ) عام ہے۔ مشرقی علاقوں میں رائے مہملہ کو لام سے بدلنے کا کچھ رجحان ہے، لہٰذا عام خیال ہے کہ ’’ملہم‘‘ میں بھی یہی ہوا ہوگا۔ لیکن چونکہ فارسی میں ’’مرہم‘‘ کے علاوہ ’’ملہم‘‘ اور’’ملغم‘‘ بھی ہیں، اس لئے ممکن ہے اہل مشرق نے یہ لفظ سیدھا فارسی سے اٹھا لیا ہو۔ فارسی کے بعض قدیم لغات، مثلاً ’’قواس‘‘، ’’زفان گویا‘‘، اور’’سرمۂ سلیمانی‘‘ میں’’ملغم ‘‘ بروزن ’’بلغم‘‘ بمعنی ’’مرہم‘‘ درج ہے۔ ’’موید الفضلا‘‘ میں ’’ملغم‘‘ اور’’ملہم‘‘ اسی تلفظ کے ساتھ بمعنی ’’مرہم‘‘ لکھے ہوئے ہیں۔ ’’بہارعجم‘‘ اور’’غیاث‘‘ میں بھی’’ملہم‘‘ بمعنی ’’مرہم‘‘ موجود ہے۔ایسی صورت میں ’’نور اللغات‘‘ کی یہ رائے کہ ’’ملہم‘‘ غیر فصیح یعنی ’’عوامی(=عامیانہ)‘‘ ہے، درست نہیں معلوم ہوتی۔
