بابو عام خیال ہے کہ یہ لفظ بنگالی، یا کسی اور پوربی زبان کا ہے، اور اسے زیادہ ترتحقیری معنی میں استعمال کرتے ہیں۔ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ اس لفظ کو محبت، احترام، اور شفقت کا اظہار کرنے کے لئے بھی استعمال کرتے ہیں۔ عین ممکن ہے کہ یہ’’ بابا‘‘ یا ’’باب‘‘ کی تصغیر ہو، اور اس میں واؤ کا حرف علامت تصغیر ہو، یا وہ واؤ ہو جسے’’واؤ شفقت‘‘ کہا جاتا ہے۔ اردو فارسی میں تصغیر بنانے کے لئے واؤ کا بھی استعمال کرتے ہیں۔ مثلاً ’’شیخ/شیخو‘‘، ’’پس/پسرو‘‘، ’’شیر/ شیرو‘‘، ’’چھوٹا/چھوٹو‘‘، ’’شیام/شیامو‘‘ وغیرہ۔ ترکی اور ایران میں بعض صوفیوں کے نام کے آگے’’بابو‘‘ لگانے کا رواج تھا۔ یہاں یقیناً اسے ’’باب‘‘ پر واؤ شفقت کے اضافے کا نتیجہ سمجھنا چاہئے۔ شیکسپیئر کا خیال ہے کہ عربی’’ابّ/ابّا/ابو‘‘، فارسی’’باب/بابا/بابو‘‘، اردو’’باپ/باپو‘‘ سب متحدالاصل ہیں۔ میرا خیال ہےاردو ’’بابَل/بابُل‘‘ بمعنی’’باپ‘‘ بھی اسی خاندان کا لفظ ہے۔ اور اس میں لام تصغیریا شفقت ہے۔ دیکھئے،’’ابا‘‘، ’’بابل‘‘۔
