हनुमत और भरत के मत से प्रत्येक राग की पाँच-पाँच रागिनियाँ और सोमेश्वर आदि के मत से छह-छह रागिनियाँ हैं, परंतु साधारणतः लोक में छह रागों की छत्तीस रागिनियाँ ही मानी जाती हैं
विशेष • इस अंतिम मत के अनुसार प्रत्येक राग की रागिनियाँ इस प्रकार हैं: श्रीराग की भार्याएँ या रागिनियाँ: पालश्री, त्रिवणी, गौरी, केदारी, मधुमाधवी और पहाड़ी। वसंत राग की रागिनियाँ: देशी, देवगिरि, बैराटी, टौरिका, ललिता और हिंडोल। पंचम राग की रागिनियाँ: विभास, भूपाली, कर्णाटी, पठहंसिका, मालवी, और पटमंजरी। भैरव राग की रागिनियाँ: भैरवी, बंगाली, सैंधवी, रामकली, गुर्जरी और गुणकली। मेघ राग की रागिनियाँ: मल्लारी, सौरटी, सावेरी, कौशिकी, गांधारी और हरशृगार। नटनारायण राग की रागिनियाँ: कामोदी, कल्याणी, आभीरी, नाटिका, सारंगा और हम्मोरी। अन्य मत से रागों की रागिनियाँ इस प्रकार हैं। भैरव: मध्यमादि (मधुमाधवी), भैरवी, बंगाली, वरारी और सैंधवी। मालकोस: टीड़ी, खंबावती, गौरी, गुणकरी और ककुमा। हिंडोल: बिलावती, रामकली, देसाख, पटमंजरी और लालत। दीपक: केदारी, करणाटी, देसी टौड़ी, कामोदी और नट। श्री: वसंत, मालवी, मालश्री, असावरी और धनाश्री। मेघ: गौड़मल्लारी, देसकार, भूपाली, गुर्जरी और श्रीरंक। कुछ लोगों के मत से रागिनियों के उक्त नामों में मतभेद भी है। इन छत्तीस रागिनियों के अतिरिक्त और भी सैकड़ों रागिनियाँ हैं, जो प्रायः कई रागों और रागिनियों के मेल से बनती हैं, और जिन्हें संकर रागिनी कहते हैं
