خاک اس لفظ کو اردو میں فارسی’’ہیچ‘‘ کے معنی میں بولتے ہیں۔ غالب نے قتیل کا مذاق اڑایا ہے کہ انھوں نے ’’ہیچ نہ بود‘‘ کی جگہ ’’خاک نہ بود‘‘ لکھ دیا ہے۔ قتیل ذی علم آدمی تھے، اور تحقیق لغات میں غالب کچھ بہت مستند نہ تھے۔ میں نے گمان کیا کہ قتیل نے ’’خاک نہ بود‘‘ بمعنی ’’ہیچ نہ بود‘‘ لکھا تو کوئی بنیاد تو ہوگی۔ لیکن تلاش بسیار کے باوجود مجھے فارسی میں ’’خاک نہ بود‘‘ بمعنی ’’ہیچ نہ بود‘‘ نہیں ملا۔ معلوم ہوا تحقیق لغات میں غالب کچے رہے ہوں، لیکن محاورے میں پکے تھے۔ اردو میں ’’خاک نہیں‘‘ بمعنی ’’کچھ نہیں‘‘ فصیح اور ملیح ہے۔ خود غالب کی غزل، جس کی ردیف ’’میں خاک نہیں‘‘ ہے،اس بیان کا ثبوت ہے۔
